Lithops Travelog

Accounts of my visits to wild Lithops localities.

LITHOPS AND A LONDONER was written after my first visit to a wild Lithops locality, which was undertaken in the company of Professor Desmond Cole and his wife Naureen. It was published in the M.S.G. Bulletin vol. 22, pp. 2-3 (2007). (It is reproduced here with the kind permission of Mrs Suzanne Mace of the M.S.G. via e-mail dated 21-06-2013.)

LITHOPS ON LOCATION was written almost exactly a year later after I spent a week travelling with the Coles in Namibia, and was published in the M.S.G. Bulletin vol. 23, pp. 52-53 (2008). (It is reproduced here with the kind permission of Mrs Suzanne Mace of the M.S.G. via e-mail dated 21-06-2013.)

LITHOPS VIRIDIS IN THE VELD was written in November 2008 after my visit the previous month to the type locality of L. viridis. It was published by the German Succulent Society “Fachgesellschaft andere Sukkulenten e.V.” in their special edition 2009 anniversary journal AVONIA, in 2 versions; English and German. WINDHOEK VIA WALVIS IN WINTER was published by the B.C.S.S. in their journal CACTUS WORLD vol. 28, pp. 77-84 (2010) following my second visit to Namibia in May of 2009. This article was translated and republished by the German Society of Other Succulents “Fachgesellschaft andere Sukkulenten e.V.” (as a PDF file) in their online magazine AVONIA-NEWS 2012-02, pp. 6-14 (2012). COLES TO COLEORUM AND OTHER COLONIES was published in the M.S.G. Bulletin vol. 26, pp. 9-11 (2011) after I spent a week travelling with the Coles in South Africa during November of 2010. (It is reproduced here with the kind permission of Mrs Suzanne Mace of the M.S.G. via e-mail dated 21-06-2013.)

SOME NORTHERN CAPE COLONIES was published in the M.S.G. Bulletin vol. 26, pp. 50-54 (2011) after a visit based in Upington in May of 2011. (It is reproduced here with the kind permission of Mrs Suzanne Mace of the M.S.G. via e-mail dated 21-06-2013.) I was later informed by Terry Smale that I had misidentified the Dinteranthus shown in Fig. 9 and mentioned in the text. It should have said Dinteranthus microspermus subsp. puberulus.

THE RETURN OF LITHOPS WERNERI was published by the B.C.S.S. in their journal CACTUS WORLD vol. 30, pp. 99-102 (2012), after a conservation based field trip I made to the L. werneri locality in Namibia during February 2012. This article was translated and republished by the German Society of Other Succulents “Fachgesellschaft andere Sukkulenten e.V.” (as a PDF file) in their online magazine AVONIA-NEWS 2013-01, pp. 6-13 (2013). It can be found at www.fgas-sukkulenten.de. One year on a brief update “ON THE RETURN OF LITHOPS WERNERI” was published in the "Cactus Talk" section of CACTUS WORLD vol. 31, pp. 220-221. NAMIBIA 2013 was written primarily for this web-site after a field trip I made in Novenber 2013. It includes a short update on the L. werneri conservation project that was published in the "Cactus Talk" section of CACTUS WORLD vol. 32, pp. 56-57 (2014), under the title of "LITHOPS WERNERI 22 MONTHS LATER". Subsequently it was published by the German Succulent Society "Fachgesellschaft andere Sukkulenten e.V." in their journal AVONIA vol. 32, pp. 128-135 (2014) in 2 versions; English and German.

LITHOPS AROUND LÜDERITZ was written primarily for this web-site after a field trip I made in August 2014. Subsequently it was published by the German Succulent Society "Fachgesellschaft andere Sukkulenten e.V." in their journal AVONIA vol. 33, pp. 112-119 (2015) in German. An English addendum was included.

KOTZESRUS LITHOPS ET AL was written primarily for this web-site after a field trip I made in August 2015. Subsequently it was published in the M.S.G. Bulletin vol. 30, pp. 84-87 (2015).

FOUR DAYS IN POFADDER was written primarily for this web-site after a field trip I made in April 2016. Subsequently it was published by the German Succulent Society "Fachgesellschaft andere Sukkulenten e.V." in their journal AVONIA vol. 34, pp. 142-151 (2016) in German. An English addendum was included.

IN AND AROUND THE "VALLEY OF MARIA" was written primarily for this web-site after a field trip I made in May 2017.

If I am fortunate enough to travel into “Lithops Land” again I will report my experiences here.
